The story behind Pizza Margherita and how it tastes

Pizza Margherita - the world's most popular pizza is a specialty from the Naples region, made with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, salt, and extra virgin olive oil. Different from other pizzas, Margherita has a very strange-sounding name, making readers curious because it is impossible to guess the ingredients for that pizza like other pizzas such as seafood pizza, and minced beef pizza, ... So right now, let's figure out the origin and characteristics of this strange cake with Texgrill.

1. Where does the name “ Margherita” come from?

Pizza originated in Italy, but now, there is still much controversy about the origin of its name. Some people have heard that the cake originated from a story related to the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, who with her husband King Umberto I visited Naples in June 1889 which had formerly been the capital of the southern kingdom. During the trip, the Empress complained about the same boring French food being repeated over and over, specially prepared food. Received the request, Raffaele Esposito, the best pizza maker in 19th century Italy, prepared a new dish to welcome Queen Margherita, and that is why pizza Margherita was born with the ingredients that Emperor Margherita was born with, including tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.

The colors on the pizza (red tomatoes, white mozzarella, and green basil) were meant to represent the national colors of Italy. However, there are also mixed opinions that Margherita is translated into Italian as "daisy" because the cake when made is shaped like a daisy with mozzarella cheese and basil leaves.

And whatever the reason, pizza Margherita is always appreciated as a delicious, luxurious, and easy-to-eat dish by most customers around the world.

2. The longest pizza Margherita in the world

The world's longest pizza was created in the port city of Salerno, Italy for $12,000 by chef Renato Viola. The cake is created with a diameter of 20cm with all-natural baking powder imported from Arab, covered with a layer of pink salt from the Murray River, Australia. To complete, the cake took 72 hours to prepare and needed the support of 80 pizza makers from all over the country gathered in Milan. The filling includes three types of rare caviar, 7 types of cheese, and Alaska lobster.

Four hundred, apparently – and 2,000kg of flour, 1600kg of tomatoes, 2,000kg of mozzarella, 200 liters of oil, and 30kg of basil are needed to make this.  The chefs also designed five custom-made wood-fired ovens on wheels for the attempt and cooked the delicious-looking Margherita on the waterfront of pizza's birthplace.

An estimated one-meter cake is made in 3 minutes and baked in 5 minutes. This new pizza beats the old record (1,1415 km) set by Spanish chefs and reclaims their world record. The fair needs 800 tables to present before people wait in line to cut the cake. And not only serving visitors to the fair of about 30,000 people, but the organizers also dedicate 300m of pizza to charity organizations to support those in need.

3. Pizza Margherita

In each region, the ingredients and flavors of the pizzas are changed to better suit the preferences and culture of that place. It can be a change in the thickness, thinness, and crispiness of the cake base or the substitution of ingredients for the cover of the cake, and that is what really affects the taste of this cake. Common ingredients to make a Margherita include:

  •          Cake base
  •          Ketchup
  •          Dried oregano leaves
  •          Mozzarella
  •          Salt
  •          Sugar
  •          Garlic
  •          Olive oil

The taste of Margherita is really unique, The sauce is sweet and tangy, with more of a marinara/pasta sauce flavor. The crust is great and has those Neapolitan-Esque burnt bubbles. Chewy but manageable. Besides that, the aroma is really impressive by the perfect combination of fresh ingredients. Margherita is famous and won the hearts of consumers for its rich flavor, tomato freshness, and fatty sweetness and the chewy, fatty texture of mozzarella cheese. Although simple, without using the best ingredients, without the meticulousness and care of the maker, it is impossible to create the taste of a real Margherita.
